How to properly store herbs

01/8Herbs are essential

Many people consider herbs to be an essential part of their diet, for not only do they enhance the flavour of food, but they also provide a pinch of extra nutrition. The only problem with herbs is that they tend to wither rather quickly, which makes it imperative to store them in a way that extends their shelf life. By knowing exactly how to preserve them, you may end up having more time to use them before they spoil. Here is how to preserve herbs correctly to maintain their freshness. (Image: istock)

02/8Oregano

To properly store the herb that is responsible for making pizza more flavoursome, place oregano stems between two paper towels, roll them up, and store in a well sealed plastic bag.

03/8Mint

When it comes to properly storing mint, there isn’t really a proper way. Mint can withstand almost any kind of exposure, plus it naturally repels bugs. Therefore you can store it in the fridge or at room temperature without worrying too much.

04/8Rosemary

To correctly store rosemary, place the stems on double-layered wet paper towels, and roll them up. Place the rolled-up stems in a plastic bag and refrigerate.

05/8Parsley (Ajmod)

Trim the ends of parsley, then wrap the herb with thick wet paper towels and store in the fridge. If you want to store it at room temperature, place it in a jar of water for preservation.

06/8Coriander

Coriander is a delicate herb, so it must be handled with care. To prevent it from wilting early, place it in a container, fill it with water upto the stems, place a loose plastic bag over the leaves, and store in the fridge.

07/8Sage (Kamarkas)

Sage can be stored in two ways to preserve freshness. Either roll the stems of the herbs in paper towels, cover with a plastic bag and refrigerate. Or you can try freezing it in ice cube trays. If you choose the latter, place the sage cube in a strainer until the ice melts away before using it.

08/8Basil (Tulsi)

The correct and possibly best way to store tulsi is to keep it potted in a sunny place. Tulsi leaves must be watered every alternate day and sprayed with water daily to increase its life.
